Ballerina Carlotta Chabert as Venus

Painting: Portrait of Ballerina Carlotta Chabert as Venus, 1830 oil on canvas painting of dimensions 183 x 137 cm (72.05 × 53.94 in) currently located at Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto.

Francesco Hayez (1791-1882), the Italian painter, is known for his paintings containing implicit stories drawn on biblical or literary narratives. During his times, there was a tendency to exploit sensuality with only the faintest overlay of a literary or artistic veil. For example, his painting, The Penitent Mary Magdalene, is supposedly 'penitent', but her representation seems painted deliberately to bring out her sensuality more than her penitence. Of course, he is not alone to promote such trends, an array of Renaissance and Baroque artists, sculptors and painters had popularized the same trends.
