According to Greek mythology, Nereids are sea nymphs, the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris, often accompanying Poseidon. They are always helpful for fishermen and sailors who face storms and other dangers in the sea. The most famous Nereids are Thetis, wife of Peleus and mother of Achilles; Amphitrite, wife of Poseidon; and Galatea, love of the Cyclops Polyphemus.
